Gok Wan is about to add stage performer to his mighty CV, by appearing in a £1m pantomime. Here, he tells Lizz Brain about his new role, his love for Leicester, his hopes for the city of culture bid and why his family remains the most important thing in life

Gok Wan has been incredibly open about his early life – discussing details of his childhood obesity, being bullied, anorexia, depression, growing up on a council estate in Leicester and being gay. And when it comes to discussing his life in press interviews and his autobiography, nothing seems off-limits. So is he media-friendly or media-savvy?

“I’ve always been an open book. But I made a decision when I started to become known that I could either try to have secrets or I could be open about who I am,” he says. “But there are certain things I don’t talk about. I limit what I say about my family, and I don’t talk about partners.
